Island of Treasures

Mallorca, Adventures and Legends

Ready for an unforgettable adventure?

Welcome to the Island of Treasures!

They say that, long ago, Mallorca was the Island of Treasures, home to wonderful beings: giants, fairies, ghosts, witches, and mermaids. To protect themselves from the evil dark shadows, they all had to hide, and they took the island’s map with them, torn into pieces, to make it harder to find.

The time has come to get it back. Will you be the brave one who manages to do it?

The Island of Treasures is part of the WoW Mallorca project, by the Fundació Mallorca Literària, and invites you to explore this fantastic world both virtually and in person, as a family, discovering the island’s traditional legends.

The Challenge

The Fundació Mallorca Literària is the organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting the language, literature, and cultural heritage of Mallorca. For years it has driven WoW Mallorca, a project that brings the island’s rich literary and legendary landscape to life through routes, maps, and materials that share its stories: tales, comics, folk stories, and short animated videos for each legend, used in storytelling sessions, family activities, and film screenings across the island.

What was missing, however, was a piece to tie it all together: a more interactive format that could complement this offering and reach audiences across the Catalan-speaking territories and beyond. The Fundació entrusted us with the challenge of taking that step and bringing the legends of Mallorca into a digital, interactive format.

The Solution

The Concept

Piecing the map back together isn’t just part of the story, it’s exactly what you do inside the game. The Island of Treasures organises Mallorca’s hundred-odd legends into layers: witches, fairies, enchantments, and all the other categories, which you can unlock as you discover them, exploring them one by one without getting lost among so many stories at once.

The Game

From home, you can explore the map and discover where each legend is hiding, whether major or minor. Every character you find is added to your collection, and the map gradually takes shape as you progress.

If you want to go further, the adventure can be completed in person across Mallorca: a radar guides you to each real location on the island, where you can free the corresponding character, both on the map and in the app.

Geolocation

Finding the legend on the map is already a small victory. But going there in person is even better! If you decide to visit the real place where the legend lives, the game rewards you with something extra. Those who stay at home aren’t left out of the fun, it’s simply that those who can make the trip earn a little something more.

This physical journey also connects you with the wider universe of The Island of Treasures: the folk tales, the videos for each legend, the storytelling sessions, and even a giant board game that travels through the same stories. The game doesn’t stand alone, it’s one piece of an experience that continues beyond the screen.

Mini-games

For younger players, there are four extra mini-games, one per setting, where you interact with the dimonis boiets, the game’s mischievous little guides. They aren’t needed to progress, but they reward you with extra coins and unlock as you discover more legends. One more reason to keep exploring.

Art and Narrative

The visual identity is defined by MAX, a comic artist who was the first to shape this imaginary world in a modern style, the same style that had already inspired the videos for each legend. It was essential to honour and build on his work, so much of the art comes directly from him, with the rest created fresh in his style: a style rooted in the island’s own tradition, not in the fantasy imagery that reaches us from elsewhere.

The narrative was developed in close collaboration with the Fundació Mallorca Literària: they knew the legends inside out, and we helped them shape those stories into short choose-your-own-adventure experiences. This is also where the image of the torn map comes from: each type of legend takes a piece with it, so the characters can’t be found too easily.

Complete the game by finding all the legends and all the pieces of the digital map, and you’ll be rewarded with a real, physical map to keep.

Impact

The Island of Treasures has been active since 2016, a full decade accompanying the legends of Mallorca, with thousands of downloads along the way. Today, it is one more piece of the wider Island of Treasures universe: complementing the folk tales, the videos for each legend, the storytelling sessions, and the giant board game that journeys through the same stories.

Ten years in is, in itself, the best proof that the format works.
